The 010 was the first post-war Retina, beginning production
in November of 1945. This particular camera, with serial number 51136, was the 1136th unit
produced, probably made in mid-December of 1945. The early 010's,of which this is one, are
very rare and quite significant in Retina history. These first units, referred to as
010/O's, were quickly rushed into production, and differed significantly from later production 010's. The pre-war lens and numerous other subtle
differences indicate the concessions made by Helmut Nagel in getting the Stuttgart plant
back into camera production. Due to the post-war shortage softer metals, of many parts of
the camera which are normally made of aluminum or brass were made of steel on the 010/O's.
The 010/O was not imported into the U.S., but was available to the U.S. military through military post exchanges. This is the original sales receipt for this camera, showing the camera being sold to 2nd Lt. Barbara Davis on February 27, 1946, by the 130th Station Hospital Exchange at APO 758 for $110.00. 2nd Lt. Davis was undoubtedly an Army nurse. |
